I have 2 situations in which I want my server to re-write the address.

1- There is only 1 ip address available and I have name resolution on so I can host multiple virtual hosts. Virtual host www.myvirtual.com is being forwarded from another server therefore when it displays the requested URL shows the URL name of the current server. I want that forwarded www.myvirtual.com to be displayed in the browser as www.virtual.com instead of adopting the local address ...

2- There is only 1 ip address available and I have name resolution on so I can host multiple virtual hosts. I want the URL www.mydomain.com to show as www.mydomain.com instead of showing the URL name for the local server

Any hints on how to do this will be welcome ...

pelmeni,

Welcome to WebmasterWorld!

Use the DNS "A" record in your domain's "Zone file" to point that domain to your IP address, instead of using "forwarding".

Thanks JD!
tell me something ... is there another way to go about it? (what happens if I do not have access to the Zone File - and I can only modify the forwarding settings?)

Switch to hosting and DNS services that give you the control you need. You will spend far more time and money on 'free' or 'cheap' services that restrict your control than you will on 'expensive' services that let you do what you need to do. If you need advanced feature control, you need 'real' hosting and DNS services.

This is just my opinion -- I see far too many Webmasters spending far too much time and effort to do things that would be simple to do if they had decent web services. You cannot fix this problem if you use a domain forwarding service based on redirection.

Thank you JD ... I like your clear and to the point style :)

Unfortunately I did not know that I would need to use the domain name to be accessed via http when I originally registered it (with yahoo.com, to be only used for email purposes)

Maybe they have a program to 'upgrade' it to a 'real' domain name? It's worth a try...
