Mod Rewrite: need a test example

Can't get this mod rewrite working so the first thing I should probably do before working on these scripts is to see if it actually functions on my server.

Could someone provide me with a very basic example I can put in an .htaccess somewhere that would prove that it's actually working in the first place.
