Apache setup

newbie requires info on how to set up

Hi,
I would like to set up Apache on my win2000 computer.
What i would like to do is use it only to edit my web shop prior to FTPing it to my ISP. This will save a lot of time as I only have dial up entry to web. The webshop I am using is Oscommerce.
I need a simple setup that a newbie can follow so I can do this.

Apache ships with a default httpd.conf which generally works for most basic setups. However, since you have provided no details on what the server is expected to do, there's not much information we can give you. Please note that, depending on what you're trying to do, the type of OS Apache is running on (as well as the directory structure of the server is general) *can* affect what the configuration will look like. Do not assume that because your works on one machine, it will work on a second (read: different) machine.

Hi,
all I wish to do is to load the oscommence site to it so that I can configure it and build the product base...My computer will act as an ISP so i do not need to do everything online.
I think I only want to set it up as a local host?

You may be better off setting up the software on the site, using an install script (I'm sure OScommerce would have one). Data is then loaded into a database, and you may well find it better to do that on the site.

You will need a template of some sort for presentation and your own Apache setup would be useful for setting up and for experimenting with the software that.

There are alternative to OSCommerce. Have you looked at any?

But for your test server you will need Apache, PHP (probably version 4, depending on what your host uses) and MySQL. They are not that hard to get working together. There are complete packages designed to be downloaded and installed together.

I looked at Oscommerce because it is free and also it has Paypal as a payment method...Merchant Bank accounts cost too much here..
What are alternatives?
