And I'm not very tech savvy so I may not be getting all the details right ..
A few weeks ago I added a 301 redirect that would rewrite all non-www to www in my .htaccess file
Since then I changed the CPanel setting for HotLinks Protection.
Then I started noticing that pages were getting indexed in Google as non-www, so I checked my .htaccess file.
The rewrite was GONE!
I had a conversation with my hosting company and as far as they can determine, HotLinks thinks it owns the .htaccess file.
So if you have a rewrite in your .htaccess file and used the HotLinks feature of CPanel, you might want to check to see if your rewrite is still there.
When I stumbled onto this I was very worried.
One of the purposes of my 301 rewrite was to avoid 302 page hijacking. If I hadn't seen the non-www pages indexed I would have likely remained vulnerable .. unless the 302 problem has been corrected?
But actually, on re-reading my description "enabling hotlink feature removed my rewrite" is not accurate. The situation occured when I DISABLED hotlink protection so my images would show in Google's cache.
Sorry for the error.:(
I had edited your thread title to mention cpanel, and I added the word "enabling" based on my understanding of your post -- my mistaken assumption that you were enabling it. I have now fixed the title to accurately reflect the situation you reported.
On the 302 problem -- Based on other threads here at WebmasterWorld, there still seem to be a few on-going problems. However, nothing happens instantly with search engines, so I'm waiting for the next G update cycle before deciding if that fiasco is over...
