i was wondering if this even exists...i have ftp access to my server <snip>, and to make it easier, i was wondering if anyone knows of any free (preferably open-source) programs i can install on the server that would allow me to edit and create files without using the ftp. sort of like the WebEditz. that is my main need, but to take it a step further: something like that, except that would allow people to have sub-accounts on my server. so for instance a friend could easily use it to create their own site hosted on my site (www.example.com/myfriendssite). and it would allow me to manage permissions and everything. in case that doesn't make any sense, this is what i want: to be able to set up a username and password, and directory for someone, and using this webedit program, they'd be able to create and edit files only inside the chosen directory. i hope that makes sense, and i know there may not be anything like that (especially free), but any help is much appreciated. thanks!

Have you considered giving your friend a blog?
Software such as Wordpress is free, and it doesnt have to look like a dated journal.
This provides the sort of access control you are looking for.
