mod_rewrite problem

Unfortunately, I do not know enough about regex to make this work...

I need to create a mod_rewrite rule that replaces all occurences of slashes (/) with dashes (-), starting after the string "public/"

So the URL:

[mycompany.com...]

would become

[mycompany.com...]

Thanks in advance for your help!
