how long does it usually take for search engines to pick up the new url?

It can be a short time or long time, sometimes very long. It depends on about 50 variables, notably which search engine, how frequently they spider, how important they think your page is, and so on. At one point, there was a suggestion that Yahoo didn't even pay attention at all to the 301!

You should plan to leave the redirect in there for a long time, if not for search engines, for all the other sources that remember your URLs.
