Looking for average number of vhosts for a server.

Not looking for a magic number but real life cases so I can get an idea

I'm trying to figure what is a reasonable average for a number of virtual hosts that can be run without the server being under heavy load.

I understand how broad this question is, but then, how do ISPs that sell hosting accounts calculate the number of virtualhosts they can have on each server?

I'm about to rent a dedicated server, a dual 2.6ghz xeon with 2gb Ram and scsi drives. I would like to estimate the number of virtualhosts that I can have in it. I won't run any dynamic or database driven sites on the server, basically is just static content.

Can anyone share some numbers, cases or experiences? Any pointers are greatly appreciated.

If it is just static content, then A LOT. Quite a lot.

If it gets to be a concern, look in to setting up thttpd if it works with the way you are doing your sites. Some people run a seperate server for their images with it (or in some cases, a version of apache with almost no modules loaded.
