Hi Can anybody help me out there. I know absolutely nothing about the construction of web sites and I have paid a web design company to construct my web site. The problem is it has been writen dynamically using PHP I think and the urls are dynamic. I am really struggling with getting rankings on google and I think that it is that they dont like the way the site is put together. I have been picking up bits of info on the web and I think the answer is to use mod rewrite to change the dynamic urls to static on the fly so google will index my pages. My web designers havent heard of mod rewrite and I am trying to find the code so they can sort it our for me. My site is on its own root server and my hosting company 1 & 1 says that mod rewrite is enabled on my server. As I say I am a numb skull and this is not my line but I believe the answer is out there somewhere. Can anyone help me with an answer?

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, David16! You'll want to kill your URL from your post using the Edit function. They're not allowed here on WebmasterWorld.

How long has the site been up? Do you have any incoming links? Before going down the mod_rewrite path, I'd look into basic SEO and make sure that is not your problem. You can use the site: command in Google to see what's been spidered. And, use the info: command to see if you're in Google's database.

When to use mod_rewrite:

When a limited number of pages show up for your site: command, and you have many more, and you know that you have a proper navigation system

When not to use mod_rewrite:

When your site is not in the index. Using mod_rewrite won't help one bit.

Thanks, The site came active in August 03 and has only ever had the home page indexed. It was in googles index up until a few days ago and has suddenly fallen out. Google showed no backward links then but I have actually got links in, only about 20 though.
