It all depends lightning. For some it works, for others it doesn´t. If I were a beginner with Adsense, I would prefer to first see what kind of money natural traffic can generate. It gives you a better understanding of how the principles of Adsense work.

2) Traffic coming in through links from ´good´ other websites and from people who have bookmarked you.
3) The traffic you buy from Yahoo Search Marketing and Adwords

I'm pretty sure traffic from type-ins would be fine (like if your site was mentioned in offline advertising or other media).

None of my sites seem to attract ther really highly priced ads, but when, at really rare times I am able to track a 1$ click, it is usually on subjects where there are new advertisers. I think these are the ones believing that the number one spot is worth a lot of money, instead of relying on the quality clicks they'd get from people taking the care to choose.

As for quality traffic. I strongly believe that the best traffic is natural traffic. Every time I happen to get a goood link from a popular site or forum, I see my eCPM lowered. But when I manage to get lots of traffic trickling in from many different sources, my eCPM goes up.
