My question is: when you first started AdSense, WHAT were the first things you did to increase earnings and multiply your visitors?
I have a few options, such as
a) create more content
b) pay others to write content
c) email other related sites for links
d) join link exchanges
e) advertise with CPC or CPM
I recently saw a competitor's page with a PageRank of 5, and inbound links come from every odd domain on the net. I am tempted to use such domains/link exchanges, but don't want to degrade the quality of my site.
What are your initial steps after creating a fresh website in an unfamiliar widget category?
The main purpose of a link farm is to deceive the indexing programs of Internet search engines that assign rankings according to the number of pages that link to a specific page. If the link farm works as planned, the search engine will believe that the promoted page is hugely popular because of all the pages that link to it and give it a high ranking. Search engine operators consider link farms an abuse and attempt to detect them, to remove them from their indices or penalize their content rank. Free For All link pages are a particular type of link farm.
Search engines such as Google recommend that webmasters request revelant links to their sites (conduct a link campaign), but avoid participating in link farms. According to Google, a site that participates in a link farm may have its search rankings penalized.

Also from wikipedia:
The high "human" traffic to FFA sites is almost completely other webmasters visiting the site to place their own links manually.
This kind of sums the vast majority of directories which 99.9999999 percent of web users have never heard of, and will never hear of. The only people going to them are typically webmasters who want links.
Will google penalize webmasters who get tons of links from these directories? That wouldn't make sense since very often a popular site will start appearing in dozens, if not hundreds or thousands of bogus/spammy adsense directories----not at the request of the webmaster who owns the site.

My site existed long before Adsense came along.
As far as Adsense itself, all I had to do was try different positions on the page for the ads, and different ad formats.
Beyond that, building traffic helped a lot. But I'd have done that anyhow, so it isn't directly related to Adsense.
As I started with AdSense 5 June 2004,
a) more content
b) my wife started 2005 to study english and translate articles from me to english
g) Starting February 2005, I started several optimizations
h) a press card makes it easy to visit fairs.
i) visit interesting innovative things to write about
