adsense at bottom of articles, not topplus one tip of my own: I placed my adsense banner at top of page so that not much else is showing, until users scroll down.
Don't those two suggestions contradict each other?
I think the gist about that advice is to place the ads where people will notice them. Ok, that's obvious, but apparently not obvious enough for there to be a full-proof successful layout strategy. Yes, I'm aware of the Google heat map, but I've read comments from people that have shown results placing ads in different places than the hot areas.
In the end it's probably best to take Google's advice as written in their heat map page.
While this heat map is useful as a positioning guideline, we strongly recommend putting your users first when deciding on ad placement.
edit:
I'm sorry if my post about ad placement was confudsing. I was talking 2 diferent placement in 2 different page types. In one page type (topics in my case) I use banner at bottom, and in other (index and other pages) I use banner at top.
I also forgot to mention the improvement section targetting made for me. It helped much in serving relevant ads more efficiently, and increased CTR dramatically.
