:) He is really excited about self-serve AdSense, this is changing webmasters' lives because They can make money on something that was a hobby; he is hoping that it can help spur the next generation of content development on the Web.

I read it this morning - he makes a mention of AdSense in the interview.

I like his comment that "You can't do a good job of search unless what you're looking for is out there"--implying that AdSense is good for Google because it encourages the development of content on a wide variety of topics.

"Sullivan said, "You've had a variety of new things come up over the past year. What do you like the most?"

Brin: "I'm really excited about our self-serve AdSense"

...and I like that, implies AdSense is working from Google's point of view, and is here to stay.

If it was not working, then no way would he have mentioned it!

Topics that are aligned with lucrative industries, yes. Content that is vital but not ecommerce-friendly gets the shaft, relatively speaking, and in the long term this could skew the internet ever more toward becoming a vapid commercial no-man's-land. If they're not careful. That's my fear, anyway.

dougb> Mind you, there are are still hordes of enthusiasts who write websites on the most obscure topics. Most are happy to invest time and resources into building their website because it's on a topic that they themselves are passionate about. Usually visitor numbers alone are sufficient payback for their efforts - at least for a limited period.

Google AdSense is a great way to reward topic-enthusiast site-builders and an extra incentive for them to keep raising the bar for their own site and keep investing effort into it instead of eventually leaving a half-finished (but potentially excellent) site to join the wash of web-flotsam.
