Hypothetical scenario and adsense earnings

If you remove adsense from a well performing site to try "something else" out for a month or two, how might this affect your epc if you later decide to put adsense back on? (assuming that other factors such as your traffic, search position, etc etc had not changed in that time)

what I'm making reference to, of course, is the fact that, for a month or two, there will be no adsense conversion data for this site. I remember reading that someone had done this and when they put adsense back on, their earnings were much lower.

Many sites that up and down earnings patterns - I wouldn't connect taking code down to experiment with something else to lower earnings.

Experimentation is wise.

I suspect you'll find that sites that were doing well under smart pricing will take a hit, and sites doing poorly under smart pricing will have a momentary boom.

Even though it's just speculation, I'd still be leery of taking AdSense completely off a site that's doing well under it. Testing a new program on a section of the site sounds safer.

Because of the absence of conversion data for the period?

This is what I am afraid of. Of course, I could do some testing, but just confine it to a matter of days, perhaps even to a 2 day period. I doubt this would hurt me.

I think I read a post somewhere where the person took down the code to try something else. The person was doing well with Adsense, but revenues took a dive when the code was put back up after weeks? of using some other program.

I wonder if conversion data/smart pricing can have a positive effect on earnings as well as a negative. If so, being out of the program for several weeks could have a negative effect on a site's earnings.

Actually, what I am thinking of doing is placing an advertiser's banner on pages that already have adsense adlinks. Since the banners would not violate the tos (not javascript-driven or contextually "called"), I could try out the results of the banners (that involves one specific advertiser) while at the same time keeping adsense onboard in a sense.

I've found that most of the high traffic "ad space" I offer through AdSense on my sites is occupied by few advertisers which found a nice advertising ground on my pages. Since the click price has been increasing for months now, it probably means that they are competing for the space. If I removed these adds and re-introduced them at a later stage, the price-per-click building would probably have to start from scratch.

Jacquex, thanks for the input. What do you think of my idea to remove adsense for only 1-2 days in order to test another type of ad product?

Depends on what ads are being displayed on that page. Are you seeing ads from specific advertisers most of the time? Are they generating descent ppc? My point is that I wouldn't risk losing a good advertiser due to a 2 day experiment. However, if that page is generating low revenue I don't see any harm in removing the ads for a few days.
