Possible to appeal Adsense refusal?

They say my site is inappropriate content

Last December I submitted my site to the Adsense program, and received an email saying that the site contained inappropriate content, and was thus refused.

My site deals with guns. There are no guns for sale on the site. There are articles, photos, and listings of retailers.

When I was refused, I accepted their decision and moved along.

However, I've noticed that a popular gun magazine pops up in Google ads. My site basically does what the magazine does: provide information.

Also, I've seen ads for a number of gun manufacturers' lines of clothing (just about every manufacturer sells their branded shirts, hats, vests, accessories). And the links are always to the manufacturers' home pages.

Given all of the above, do you think it's possible to appeal the decision by the Adsense folks? And, if so, how?

Thanks for any replies.

try changin things..
removing words like HATE, WAR and stuff..
there are some unofficial word lists, of the words that you can not use, or you will start seeing PSA

You could always resubmit your application, and mention what you've said here, however, I think Google feels pretty strongly about Guns, and enforce that policy fairly strictly.

OK, what shows up in Google Ads vs what is allowed on the AdSense content network are completely different things.

Have you seen gun ads on the AdSense content network?

incrediBILL, the ads I mentioned are on the Google Adsense network.

As for words like "hate," or "kill," they don't show on my site, and they don't show up on any site that I would ever frequent or have frequented.

This is not the proper forum to debate issues about guns, and I don't want this thread to turn into a debate about such.

My site features products that are 100% legal, used by some 80+ million American citizens for hunting, competition, and just plain recreation.

That's a very large demographic.

If I were selling guns off the site, I could see the reason for Google to say "no." But, if they allow ads for sites that are substantially similar, then it would appear that the Google Adsense team is engaging is selective interpretation of the "inappropriate content" rule.

Use the adsense preview tool to see if appropriate advertisers show up on your site.

If they do, I'd send their support team an email, mentioning that there are relevant advertisers in their network.

When I did a regular google search on the keywords "guns" and another on "rifles", there were ZERO adsense ads shown on the google results page. That makes sense because adwords won't accept advertisments for them, so they aren't going to be displayed anywhere (?).

Same for "ammunition".

I'm not sure what kinds of ads (and revenue), you would create from your site from adsense, even if you did get in. You'd be in a better position to know if you could receive context based ads that weren't completely not relevant to your visitors.

I would suggest writing to the NRA or a place like that, or perhaps even the American Civil Liberties Union (afterall, it is both a matter of free speech and a matter of constitutional right)

If they get some publicity, and they have the choice between their loss of millions or perhaps even billions of dollars, (if it should escalate) they might either get a unique chance in life to prove their commitment to their political position, or they might back down.

Hey... I have a popular page on one of my sites. But it has the name of a dangerous type of gun in the URL.

It is actually about making this gun in a harmless way for kids to shoot mini-marshmallows.

Can't run AdSense on it... only PSA's show-up.

I've tried everything... LOL.

Too many mentions of the word "gun" does the job of banning it from AdSense alone.

I've tried putting very descriptive phrases like "marshmallow gun", "kids toy gun", etc. in the title, but to no avail.

And if I change the URL title, I know it won't get all the hits it does...

I ended up trying a ClickBank ad on it that will appeal to the terrorist types that are probably the only ones accessing the page. LOL

This has nothing to do with free speech as the web site isn't being banned or blocked, it's just not being permitted in the advertising network due to content and Google is entirely within their rights.

Getting advertisers isn't a constitutional right best I can tell....

Let's see:

THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION

Article. I.

Section 1.

All legislative Powers herein granted shall be vested in Google, which shall consist of a Search, AdWords and AdSense

I just thought of something... can we put a Google search box on a page that will only show PSAs otherwise?

At least I could get some pennies adding up from this high-traffic page with a search box. Especially when almost 100% of those who find the page do NOT find what they are looking for and would go right back to Google search to try again...

Anyone know?
