mcavill is asking why a friend's logs show referrals containing the word googlesyndication. These were also accesses to the IP number of the server, not the domain name.
I tried to reply, but the topic was too old.
I've recently found out, through examining logs of open proxies, that this is an indication the server is an open proxy and is being misused by people seeking to gain money from banner and ad programs.
Note that what I'm talking about these accesses, I'm not talking about referrals, but accesses. The referral will often be a site containing those ads.
Open proxies are almost the only reliable way to see ads from different regions. If your are a publisher in Europe who wants to have ads targeted to the US, your only reliable way is to use a proxy in the US to camouflage yourself as a US-user.
This bear capacity for misuse too. The system as such is not prone at all to smart(!) misuse!
Blunt (stupid/greedy) misuse can be easily detected though, and Google seems to be very responsive if you approach them with this. At least I've read this in several posts here.
