Using styles to alter websearch

is it allowed?

I wanted to style the search box using CSS, but I'm not sure if its against the TOS or not. Not to alter the code in any way just to change the background color since the only options they give you is black or white.

You're going to find this ugly. The available graphics are matted for white, black and grey. Put it on blue and you'll get an ugly fringe.

I wouldn't change the code itself. Less intrusive would be to put the thing within a div. This should allow you to a fair amount, defining special rules for the image, text box, etc.

When it first started I recall they told people to write them before you made changes. Some people did, and got affirmative responses. I'd try that.
