Entering into AdSense contract when under 18 years old

Yesterday I received my first check from G for September. I was surprised to see that no tax was deducted. Is that because i'm 14 years old? It would be nice if I continued to receive checks without a tax reduction!

Teddy,

14 years? How is the possible? You should be atlease 18 to participate in Google AdSense. Right?

Not that I know of. I was able to signup by my name and information. I also entered my social security # and tax information correctly. I have been going since June but my site was officially launched in August.

I assume you're in the States Teddy?

I don't know about the US, but in the UK you need to be 18 to enter into a contractual relationship with someone.

Does seem a bit odd to me, although I can't see anything in the Google TOS about it.

Anyway, congrats on your first cheque ;-)

You might want to ask an accountant what the legal age is that you can be taxed. There may be special provision - I'm pretty sure there is here in the UK (under 16's don't pay tax).

I was surprised to see that no tax was deducted.

Google doesn't take tax out of any of the checks it sends. It is your responsibility to claim the money as income on your taxes. The only reason Google collects tax information is so that they can send you a W-2 at the end of the year.

And once they send you the W2, it means that the IRS also got it -- and knows that you are earning income and hence should pay your taxes.

Unlike porn, you need to have a credit card to sign up to at least prove you are of legal age. With Adsense, they simply believe in the inate goodness of men.

Google does require that participants be eighteen years of age - see the first clause of the AdSense Terms and Conditions.

Some minors have their parents open an account for them.

By the way, Google sends us 1099. It is not W-2 as I mentioned earlier. That means, you take care of your own taxes. IRS is furnished a copy of that.

Phew, got away with that one =)

You should be fine as long as some Google person doesn't come on here and feel the need to look up your details and take all your money away. Hehe.

Nice to see your getting an early start at 14. I was 15 when I first started making money off my site 5 years ago and since then I've made enough to buy my own car and pay all its expenses as well a good amount of spending money on the side :). Keep it going and realize there is no limit to what you can make. Although I would make sure you put it in your parents name until your 18 just to be safe

You know...I wonder how willing google will be to swith the account holder of my account to my parents untill they relize I am 15...LOL.

I accidently diden't think and signed up under my name and info instead of my parents...mmmm....oh well.

EDIT: You know...I bet google woudlen't find changing the ownership name for me since I haven't done the tax forum thing yet because of downtime all summer...mmm...oh well...i'll find a way.... :D

I think it's better to leave it as is. There is no way Google will be able to check, plus, if the cheque is to your parents, they would have to pay taxes on it, but if you're under 18, you don't pay any (at least that's how it is in Canada) up to a certain amount.

So you dont think I'll get in trouble if i enter my S/N and then they will never check...

Hopefully :P

maybe if they do find out they will be nice and let me resignup under my parents and not take my money either...i mean would it be a big deal to them to delete my ac#*$! and let me resign up under my parnets name anyways if they ever do find out...it isne't like they woudl just ban me from the program...woudl they?
