The postman just delivered a nice little present from the Google Adsense team today.

A little green notebook full of tips on how to increase my Adsense income. The cover says:

Tweak your way to profitability
TIPS FOR BOOSTING YOUR INCOME WITH ADSENSE

I thought it was pretty cool :)

they love me...they really love me :)

agreed... completely useless. A couple months ago I would have framed it and put it on the wall for everybody to see - it's in the trashcan right now.

I have not received the book. No book, no gift, nothing.

If it was some sweet "inside tips" it would be worthwhile, but it looks as if it costs a fair amount per book to be printed over however many people go it, it adds up.

At first i was excited, i thought it was a gift or something, but then i saw it was a useless way of Google to bleed some cash.

Currently i am using it to prop up one leg on a shifty patio table outside. Works well for tasks like this.

I think i have a good enough CTR and income already. I am part of the fedex club most months.

I did take some kind of survey from google a while back about adsense, maybe this is a result of that?

I think that the book should be very useful for a lot of publishers, most of which I am sure do not visit this site. People that frequent WW and similar resources already know them.

My "green book" just arrived today, so it appears that Google is still sending them.

As already mentioned, for WW regulars there is nothing new in the book. BTW, you can get the same information from Google at this url: [google.com ]

Just got my "booklet". As it seems to coincide with my worst adsense month ever, it's only mildly amusing.

Somehow I don't think it's a good sign that google has to promote random colors to attract attention and "putting the ads smack dab in the middle of the content"

Text-ad blindness anyone?

Text-ad blindness anyone?

I haven't seen any sign of that in 13+ months of using Google's off-the-shelf AdSense color scheme.

Maybe it's more of an issue on news, portal, and community sites that get the same visitors day after day.

Speaking of color, I just saw this today on an online classified list:
"...am willing to post your link on my site's home page matching the color of my background if you are willing to do the same for me. Because it will match the color of the backgrounds, no one will see our links, but the more sites that are linked to a site, the better placement the site will have on Google's search engine."

Are these the kind of tricks that people are using or is this the kind of trick that get these people tossed? I'm just starting to catch up with this aspect of the web ~ I've not gone full cycle as a site owner ~ I'd like to avoid falling for the wrongs tips & tricks.

I would say the latter (likely to get you tossed).

Consider the source (classified ads list), I wouldn't use that as a good reference for information on how to run my business.

Stick with the major sources of info (including google themselves...see their webmaster info page), and you should be fine.

I can't believe Jenstar wouldn't get an embossed copy signed by Alan Greenspan.

They give out thumb drives?:(

WorldViewer,

It's my understanding that what the site in question will likely get them in very, very hot water with G. Personally, I would run away from those guys as fast as my legs would carry me.

Build good content, keep the code clean and simple, offer real value and stay between the lines. These roads may not lead you to the top of the mountian, but they're likely to keep you from being thrown into the ravine.

Good luck!

It's the kind of stupid, obvious trick that gets people tossed from Google's search results (and those of other search engines).

I'd suggest reading Google's Webmaster Guidelines to stay out of trouble with search engines and with AdSense:

I got the booklet today too. Very silly. I think it's time WE gave Google a few tips for better response to their ads.

Tip #1 -- Give webmasters control over the keywords their pages are targetting! People don't click on unrelated and/or offensive ads.

I don't know that any other tips are needed. If Google would follow Tip #1, its earnings would improve and it wouldn't need to send out silly booklets. (I'm keeping mine in case it's collectible.)
