I've heard from others that free hosts are not allowed, but I can't find anything in their policies or terms and conditions saying that, and I initially was accepted into the program with a free site. The application site has to look good and be of decent quality to be accepted, though.

A member here placed AdSense on a Geocities site. He was told to remove it, unless he could prove he owned geocities.com ;)

You must have ownership, or legal permission of the owner for placing AdSense on any domain, and this also includes things like free webhosts (ie. geocities) and even free blog sites (ie. blogspot, livejournal etc).

that's interesting jenstar. a site that lands on page one of the search for "<keyword>" is a freewebs page.

ownerrim -- you're talking of the Google search engine results, not sites running adsense. Google SERPS can show sites using free web hosting - but we're not talking about that here. We're talking of free hosting sites WITH Adsense

alika, that WAS a site with adsense. should have been more clear. and it was a freepage running adsense for a BIG BIG money keyword

Well, "WAS" is the operative word as it is no longer running Adsense on the site. Must be that G asked them to remove the code -- only proves the point that free web hosting and Adsense DO NOT mix.
