Hi Ian,

Welcome to Webmaster World.
I believe Adsense TOS state you are not allowed to promote a site (that has Adsense code on it) in a spammy way, including through unsolicited (mass) e-mail. So it all depends.

1) Do you send an e-mail with a link to your site to some customers, friends or family-members (OK);

2) Do you send a newsletter with a link to your site to everyone who signed up for it (OK);

3) Do you send everyone in the phonebook an e-mail with a link to your site (big NO-NO!).

I also would be careful with option:

1) Cause friends and family-members might wanne help you by clicking some ads (= account banned)
2) Some folks who signed up for your newsletter might have forgotten they did, and report you to Google as being a spammer (= account banned).

So e-mail is OK in some cases, but be careful with it. I am sure there are other forum members who can tell you how to do this properly.

Option 2 should be OK so long as you follow a "double opt-in" policy and keep a database you could forward to Google as "proof" if you were ever accused of spamming ;)

Well, I sent mail for my main site long before adsense and will continue. I don't really see how it is a concern of theirs.

Now if I sent an email that said "Please come to my site and click my adsense links" I suppose they would have a case, but otherwise it really isn't any of their business.

I don't really see how it is a concern of theirs.

So long as one isn't drawing undue attention to, or soliciting recipients to click on, the ads, it isn't any of Google's concern.

However, there are two issues here and the second is the emails themselves. As I suspect the OP is based in the UK, he should also follow the "double opt-in" policy already mentioned in order to be fully compliant with the Data Protection Act regarding email sign-up.
