I've got a site with adsense on it and over the last few months I've learned that when my earnings go down I need to check the ads that are displaying and usually block a bunch of them.
As soon as I do this my revenue increases again. But now I've got a problem - my competitive ad filter is maxed out at 200.
What the heck can I do to keep the junk ads out? I'm now at the point where I have to delete old entries and replace them with new ones.
"Keep your ad blocker only for the competiton,you shouldn't get junk."
The advice at the time was great and judicious use of the filter for the competiton worked really well and helped me to many comfortable 4 figure months.
Well it seems this advice no longer holds true for me. (I understand that others have succumbed to junk earlier than I) but For the first time I'm getting MFA's and completely off topic ads. My ad filter is filling up fast.
On a purely operational level it would be far easier to simply have some function within the adsense preview tool that would automatically ad a url to the filter list. Copy and paste is a pain.
As far as the actual issue of Junk ads is concerned, I'm frankly at a loss, It's obvious the Algo needs another tweak, but thats as far as my knowledge goes. MFA's are weakening the whole G ad network and it must surely be in G's interest to filter these.
G has cracked black hat, MFA's are the new bad boy on the block.
Example: if you have content that warns consumers about "payday lenders" or "cash advances", that content will display ads for exactly what we're suggesting that they avoid if possible. We either have to monitor and disable Adsense at the page level, or set site-wide filters. Either way it adds overhead that offsets Adsense ROI. Eventually you hit the 200 ceiling and just have to give up the whole program.
For me it isn't always "competitive" ads that are the problem
As many other adsense publishers, I happen run a website that sells a product. Obviously, as product sellers we all have we all have our competitors within our niche and we all develop strategies to deal with the competition, after all it's just one everyday aspect of running a business.
I've always maintained that as Adsense publishers however, our true competitors are MFA's. MFA's are different. Unlike competitors in the conventional sense they often employ deception as their sole luring strategy. Therefore as a competitor, I can not develop counter strategies to monitor or compete against them. This is why I block the deceptive MFA competitor rather than legitimate competitor within my niche.
If I sell green widgets and my visitor in looking for green widgets decides to compare prices by seeking my legitimate competitor selling green widgets, then that's a choice the visitor will decide to make regardless of whether my competitor is advertising the green widgets on my site or not. If it is inevitable that my visitor is going to make the decision to leave my site in search of green widget alternatives, then I would relish the opportunity of being paid for providing a quality lead. Who knows? That visitor may return to my site because they had decided that my product was superior and because my website carried some credibility by providing alternative leads also.
I know that there is always the argument that the visitor may not look through my site because they may succumb to a well written competitor's ad beforehand, but I rather they succumb to a well written competitor's ad that takes them to a legitimate site, than a deceptive but well written MFA that takes them to a place of frustration (keep in mind also that MFA's that are not well written at all will also scare customers away because they make your landing page look like a joke}
Now my business model may not work for everyone, but in my case the product that I sell (which is labour intensive to produce) requires quite a bit of awareness from the consumers point of view. Well before introducing adsense, I found that if my visitor doesn't have the concentration span to take the time getting to know my product they tend switch off and leave without buying or they end asking obvious questions to which the answers are already in front of them on my website. I take the attitude that I am now making money from customers who would normally leave because of their limited attention span in addition to those who were always destined to seek out my competitor of green widgets.
The Do No Harm philosophy seems to be overlooked in this area.
There are couple of areas where Google seems to fall short. When the jagger updates came out my site took a several month long nose-dive while scraper sites climbed to the top of the charts.
What bothered me is that Google was actually subsidizing the theft of content from my site by allowing these scaper sites into the adsense program.
This caused me to realize that Google is not discerning enough with regards to the people it allows in the AdSense publishing program. In a similar vein they seem to also be oblivious to who they let in the AdSense advertising program.
It seems to me that if Google took the time to review AdSense publishing accounts as well as the advertisers we would have no problem with scraper sites or junk ads.
I don't understand why Google does not go back to their core business and refine it instead of going after new revenues. OR, I don't understand why they don't devote more financial resources to refining their core business WHILE looking into new ventures.
The bottom line is this;
If Google spent more time making sure only real advertisers get in the program then the junk ads would be minimal.
If Google spent more time making sure only real publishers were allowed into the AdSense program then scraper sites would not be getting paid by Google to steal from me.
If Google did these things then they wouldn't have to worry about implementing things like the Jagger update which punished me and rewarded the thieves who have been subsidized by Google.
To make matters worse, I'ver reeported at least 100 scraper sites using the Send Google My Thoughts on this ad links and not one of them has been booted. They are still stealing content from my site and being subsidized by Google to do it.
To me the answer is simple but it's dependant on Google actually doing something about it in house. If Google wants us to police the program ourselves that's fine - but then they need to actually need to respond to the people who report the violations instead of round filing the complaints in the garbage bin.
