Reports are circulating about Google's readying a desktop competitor to Microsoft, but a Google spokeswoman says the Linux use is for "internal" use only.

We've heard the story before, so there's nothing new in the rumours. I see no reason why a tech company wouldn't use its own version internally.
Using open source is great, but I believe many are slow to trust, without knowing exactly what is going in within the code.
By using their own version they can probably come closer to guaranteeing security of corporate pc's.
If you strip an OS back to the kernel, then build on it using trusted software, and their own software then they will have a system they can trust.
The same has already happened with Google search servers. They run a Google specific OS that is very Google specific, from the Kernel to the file system, but we dont hear many rummors of Google developing a server OS.
It makes sense that the same principles of security and customisation should apply on all Google platforms from index servers to office pc's.
