Fill an empty column

Hi all!
Maybe this is a stupid question but.. that's life!
I want to create two colums of equal height with different backgrounds, such as this:

<div id="float-left">
Links
</div>
<div id="main-content">
Ideo autem aquis concupiscientia hiuis mundi comparatur....
</div>
</div>

How can I do if the left side doesnt'have the content necessary to reach the height of the main-content side?
