Microsoft vs. MAC Font Types

...how do the two families relate?

The two most popular operating systems might have font types that are similar, but have different names.

Does anyone know of a site that list type fonts by popularity by serif, sans-serif, and monospace for both OS?

Up until now I've been merrily choosing the default options for font families, but truthfully I don't know if they are only Windows or Apple based. I'd like to be able to select the font for Windows and the closest corresponding font for the MAC.

If you've been down this road it would help if you posted how you handle font families for Windows/MAC.
