Alt is displayed in serif?

It's not very important...

But if I replace images with their alt attributes using FireFox 1.0 & Webdeveloper Toolbar the text is in Times Roman while everything else is Arial as defined in my stylesheet. Anybody have an explanation for that?

strange one...have you got the Arial font style set on the body element, or the individual elements?

You've discovered an example of browser behavior that is clearly underspecified in the W3C standards. Jukka Korpela's definitive pages on alt text design [cs.tut.fi] describe some of this variation; there is no way around it at present, as far as I know. It isn't really the browser's fault: the standards should specify more clearly how alt text is to be displayed and styled (same style as the parent element, I would say).
