Handheld Stylesheets

Wondering if anyone makes these and what tips, if any, they have

I just stumbled across an intriguing article ("Pocket-sized Design") over at ALA about handheld stylesheets and best practices for implementing them. I hadn't heard of handheld stylesheets before and was immediately intrigued!

Looking around the 'net I also found another good article on HTML Dog Blog which polled their readers about how a test page looked on their handheld devices. It was fascinating to read the results from different users!

Unfortunately, what I got from the article is that support for media="handheld" is rather spotty at the moment. Which took the wind right out of my sails, 'cos, you know, I like the idea alot!

Anybody care to wade in on this discussion? Do you use handheld stylesheets? Have tips to go along with it? Any other opinions?

Thanks! :)

I haven't used handheld stylesheets before - most of my cutomers don't want to spend money on print stylesheets, let along handheld!

But, that doesn't mean I don't believe in them. I think it's just a matter of time before their use is more widespread - not too long ago, CSS support was horrible! Now it's just annoying. <g>

Hi HannahG

I would like to know some more about this too and had originally posted this in another thread before I saw this one :o..

Also can anyone confirm, give opinions about the PDA's use of media type handheld, I think that previously/still? although most handheld devices didn't actually support "handheld" they did support "screen" media in error, I don't know if that's still the case or not?

I have always used the "screen" media on the understanding that at least handhelds get a text only page (ala older browsers), with ordered source etc taking care of the page logic, but don't know if that's the best way to go or not?

I try to make sure that pages look decent and are readable in a text browser and include the obvious 'skip nav' links etc. I just assumed that handheld devices would ignore my @import and just display the page sans stylesheets... I may have been mistaken...
