nested 3 column grid and display:block

Hello,

I have built a three column page, center column is typical changeable content.

Then I added a nest three column grid (position: absolute) for the center column.
(wanting pix starting at diff. heights with captions below)

That was all working perfectly in ie6 nn7 and op5.

Until I needed display:block for nn7 to display img's correctly, that's okay, I don't mind BUT...

display:block in ie6 sets the center nested column ONLY off by about 20px.

Tried various boxmodel hacks that I could find but they weren't really relevant and anyway didn't work.

Can anyone a) explain this to me b) help me out.
