Can anyone tell me whether Google pass or fail on a destination URL by just looking at the URL that it is sent to and comparing it to the display URL - or do you click across to the site to see if the ultimate URL is the same?

If I had to guess, they actually click. They need to check for pop-ups, redirects, back-button disableing and affiliate status as well. All of these things have to be done by clicking through.
