I am looking at adwords, i want to use it to do some research on keyword usage but i am hitting a wall.

1. Lets say one of the words I bid on is 1 of 5 other people bidding on that word. When the user searches for that word and my ad shows, that is counted as one impression. What if that same user hits the next button and goes to 11-20 of the serps and my ad gets shown again does that count as another impression. 2 for the same user?

2. if my add position is like 9 and a user searches for the word i am bidding on. but for every user that searches for that word they never go to page 2 I will never get an impression. becasause my ad only shows on the second page of results? correct.

So am i right with these two points?

I don't know the answer to your first question, but I would expect it to count as 2 impressions.

In answer to your second point, there is a chance that you can bid too low to get any impressions. However, if you have a predicted average position of nine I'd expect to get some impressions through. Lots of people go to the second or third page of search results just to read the ads!

I was also thinking unless all my words have brackets on them there is now way to gauge real keyword usage? along the the 2 points outlined above.

What do you mean by keyword research?

If you mean looking at the number of times a keyword / phrase is typed in then you can get a feel for relative popularity, but it's unlikely your ad will be show every time the phrase is typed.

Of course, unless you achieve 0.5% CTR then your ads will be disabled for the poor convertors. This means your research could be shortlived.
