After using adWords for some time now to generate extra traffic to our websites. Overall, the venture met with mixed results. From what I've seen it seems that google is excellent for reaching large numbers of consumers. However, it seems that these large numbers convert to very small sales.

I know each web site can vary depending on its product, but I'm just asking in general here. From anyone that has used adwords; Do you find it useful in generating more revenue and agree that it offers a good ROI?

I would say if you have "reaching large numbers" and "small sales" - your ads are not targeted enough.

Instead of "widgets", target "wooden widgets".
Instead of "wooden widgets" target "red wooden widgets".
Instead of "red wooden widgets" target "red wooden widgets sale".
Well, you get the idea.

Up to the point where you get good conversion and not enough traffic. That's when you know you've hit the right spot.
After that target "blue wooden widgets sale" and "yellow wooden widgets sale" to cover more market.
