They wanted to by front page Google.
Once they reached first page on google we decided that they should start running an adwords program. it took a bit of getting through to them but our reason was plain and simple "there are many different type of people that surf the net some use google some use msn, but more importantly you have people that just use adwords because they believe those results are MORE relevant then the actual serps" any way to cut a long story short their traffic is up by 20%.

There are not many people who believe that adwords results are more relevant! ;)
If your client is still not very sure, you can probably tell him/her -We are number 1 in serps for "green smoking widgets" but not "smoking widgets". We can use AdWords to make sure we are in the first page of search results for the keywords you choose

Maybe not, but there are some of us who think they are in certain cases.
I often do searches on Google and go straight to the Adwords first, particularly if I'm in a 'buy' mode. The reasoning? Well, my GoogleBar uses .com as default, although I live in the UK. I do not really want UK specific searches 99% of the time, but when I want to buy something, I want to buy it from the UK. Since the Adwords are targeted, I can usually find a 'special deal' or at least a UK specific supplier within a few boxes!
Because of Google's stringent CTR requirements, I find that Adwords, on the whole, are very high quality, and will generally check out the sites whose ad catches my fancy. I think Adwords are great, both as a surfer AND as an advertiser myself.
When I shop online, I use Overture or Adwords only. I find the results to be much better for commerce. Often, you can avoid the middleman too (affiliates), making the experience that much quicker.
