My big bloated but well established campaign

What do I do about it?

Similar to the "when I first started with adwords I was so naive" post, I have an old campaign that does fairly well for me, with a lot of well established ads, but way, way too many keywords in there. I really would like to break this up, and associate individual ads with specific keywords, rather than the big mishmash that is in there now.

HOWEVER...

It is doing reasonably well! I have some very well established ads and a long track record with some of those keywords. I do not want to start from square one again, I would like to somehow retain my good CTR history for my keywords and ads!

I guess there's no way? I should bite the bullet and just reorganize it all, and start from zero

:-(

Thoughts?

Boy, are YOU in luck!

Google just implemented the ability to move or copy ads and keywords between adgroups, either in the same or a different campaign.

This seems to at least partially address your problem.

I had a pretty good talk with a Google rep about this yesterday. I would advise checking with them yourself, though, in case I misinterpreted something.

- keyword history is retained, both before and after this change. The change just makes the housekeeping easier.

- Ads that are moved do not require review. A cynic might suggest that this is more for Google's convenience, as it will reduce their work load considerably. In any case, your moved ads should run on search network and/or content network immediately, without requiring manual review, assuming they were previously reviewed.

My understanding is that ad history is NOT maintained, though. The counters get reset to zero.

Why risk changing something that's making you money for the sake of tidiness? Don't touch it!

I agree.

There is that pesky 25-campaign limit, though.

I started out the wrong way as well. I did re-organize, but left a couple of very profitable campaigns as-is. I knew that at minimum I would incur a 3-day penalty while my ads were re-reviewed before they would run on the search network.

Uh-uh. Naw.
