I want to make sure the the impressions that I'm getting are indeed "qualified leads". I have a list of several hundred negative keywords to block the unwanted views. But my conversion rates are lower than expected, so I think it's possible that I am getting a significant amount of traffic that is not looking for what I'm pitching.

Is there a tool out there that will provide this? Essentially, say I get 50 impression per day. This tool would list each query that led to my ad being served:

1) blue widgets
2) large widgets
3) teflon widgets
.
.
.
50) lemon-scented widgets

If so, where can I find this tool and how much to use it?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure of a "tool" but do you have access to your server's logs? If it's hosted somewhere else, will the admins give you access to those logs? If not, can you use some scripting language to get the referer or query strings? That's where the data is. Then I suppose you can use stuff like spread sheets or tools like log analysis software to find what you're looking for.

a quick look at my logs shows stuff like

google.com/search?hl=en&q=blue+widgets

you could search for stuff like that and even write a script to extract the "blue widgets" part.

good luck.

Thanks for the tip, Dr. X. Will a tool like Urchin give me the abliity to pull out and compile those stats? Or do I have to work with my dev team to write the scripts to grab that data?

Hi again. :-)

I've never used Urchin. But at a glance it seems to be some kind of analisys tool. Any tool that claims to be that, better be able to get the query strings for you. And if not, then you shouldn't buy it.

Also, you have a dev team? You really should be discussing this with them as more than likely they will tell you "Dont' buy no steenking tool, we can make one in about 10 minutes!" :-D Or they'll say "We need Bla-Bla so we can intigrate it with this project we're working on now."

Show them exactly what you need and they'll probably write a short script that can get you quick results. But if the Urchin has other tools that you may need, then why re-invent the wheel. Buy the steenking tool :-p

PS: you can never have too much information about your type of customer. If this tool is indeed what they claim, don't ignore the information it offers you just because you only wanted the query strings. There is other even more valuable data in there in my opinion.

Along with negative keywords, you should also look at conversion rate by country (and country/keyword). I have found from other campaigns that some countries just seem to deliver non-converting traffic, and simple removing them from the regional targeting in Adwords can make a dramatic difference.

Podium Analytics is a tool that does this. There's no software - it uses a script to track a site remotely.
