I am new to adwords and decided to do a little trial run. I am so sick of waiting for the dance.

I have an exact keyword phrase [widgets online]
I put in a maximin cpc of $2.00
From the traffic estimator:
Average Cost-Per-Click $.065
Cost/Day $.036
Average forecast position 8

After a day I had 3 impressions with an avg. position of 76.4

Why did I get such a low position when the estimator said I would be number 8? I bid well above the $.065

I also have a second campaign and did not receive any impressions in in 24 hours, which I am surprised at. Is there a way to tell how many times a phrase or keyword is searched for before you bid?

I have spent quite a bit of time going through this forum and thought I had a handle on adwords but apparently I don't.

The Estimator is simply that a guess, and not always a very good one.

The formula for your placement is based on what you are willing pay and your CTR. Obviously Postition 76.4 sucks, so your going to have to tweak your ad copy and up your amx cost per click and then watch your campaign like a hawk for a while until you see the CPC rising to $2 if that is your comfort level and your CTR will increase along with it. Because as your CTR goes up your cost to maintain your position may drop, you need to be watching so you can throttle back your max. CPC.

You may have to make your max CPC $4 to actually spend $2 and see what position that gets you. You really have to play with the campaign until you settle into a comfotable position and then you don't have to watch all day long anymore.

Good luck.

Over the wekend it told me that my daily spend on just one Campaign would be $800.00 and 5 minuets later it said $5.40

You have to test it yourself. Protect yourself by limiting your daily spend and teaking it up as you begin to see results.
