Fired off tech support emails to the obvious places, but it's going to be a long day.......
Logged out and back in again and the 'failed' report was actually ready and waiting in the 'Download Centre'. Might be worth a try...
In light of the problem earlier I also created a second report and had it emailed. Even though a 'failed' message appeared when creating the report, it arrived via email just shortly after.

I did hear, this morning, of a few cases in which reports had to be run twice in order to be delivered - although I believe this is resolved now.
If reports still aren't working for you, I'd suggest a quick email (from within the effected account) to AdWords support, with details on the reports you tried to run, and what happened.
