Over what time period is ads CTR determined?

I understand an ads position is partly dependent on the CTR of the ad. Over what time frame is the ads CTR calculated (since creation, last edit, last day, last hour, ect.) or is it calculated by the CTR achieved since the last X impressions?

It's my understanding it is since you created that ad BUT if you edit ANYTHING in the ad you start over. The only thing I think that does not change it is changing your keyword bid amounts for that ad.

My understanding was that it was based on every 1000 impressions

Thanks, so how did you guys reach this understanding as I cannot find it stated anywhere on their site. Did someone in their support tell you this?

So would this mean that if I launch a new ad and it had two impressions and one click through that the CTR would be 50% and therefore my ad would rank #1? Surely there must be a minimum impression or time hurdle, no?

There are several CTRs:
- Individual kw CTR
- Ad group CTR
- Content CTR
- Total Search CTR for ad-group
- Google search CTR for ad-group
- Ad-copy CTR
- Individual kw CTR from total searches
- Individual kw CTR from Google search only.

The last 2 CTRs are the most important ones. The first is used to determine the ad-position and actual cost. The second one is for the kw status.

When you said "ads CTR", what CTR do you mean to?

I meant the CTR that determines an ads position for any one keyword for searches done on Google only. So the "individual kw CTR from total searches" is what determines this? If so, when you wrote "total" do you mean that the time period that this CTR is calculated for is since the keyword was first entered? Thanks.

To answer your original question, Jkelly, the short story is that it is the all time CTR that counts, with the most recent impressions being weighted slightly more heavily.

This taking into account of the all time CTR will prevent your keywords from being disabled if they have operated well over time, but have a few really bad days, for example.

And keep in mind that, by definition, your per-keyword CTR changes every single time you have an impression for that keyword. So a keyword with two impressions and one click, and a CTR of 50%, is an anomaly that almost certainly won't last for long.

Thanks, you are refering to the all time CTR of each keyword right?

Yes, that is the most important factor by far.

And then, as mentioned in another thread (today, I think), the CTR of a keyword and the specific ad copy that it brings up is of some importance too, in cases in which there is more than one ad in an Ad Group.
