When I can do this, it really helps me speed up which ad to use -- and my clients really love it when we can work based on good experimental results rather than just guesswork.
Recently, I am working with a new client.
Sure enough, the system is auto optimizing the ads.
I clearly TURNED OFF the check box which says "Automatically optimize ad serving for my ads."
I have spoken several times to a Googler about this (yes I know the secret phone numnber) and months ago they told me words like "oh, turn it off, and then turn it back on and it should work fine"...
I find this method DOESN'T work and this really gets my goat!
Perhaps there is a secret trick that others can share that serves as some kind of SIMPLE work around...
Maybe maybe, AWA is listening and maybe can do something about this?
For help on this, these two posts have a lot of the answers:

After that, try adjusting the setting again. If this doesn't work, I'd call Google support again.
Engineering is currently working on it, but would be very glad to have actual examples 'In The Wild', so to speak.
So, having tried eWhisper's suggestions above, if you find it's still not working 'as advertised', I wonder if you'd contact AdWords support via the Contact Us link in the account in which this is occurring - and briefly outline in which Ad Group you are seeing this, etc.?
(Same goes for anyone else who is currently seeing the same thing, BTW - i.e. cases in which the rotation is currently not working as expected.)
Please mention in your email that the tech team has requested that examples of this occurrence be forwarded to them.
Thanks very much, in advance. Actual examples certainly help to track down slippery issues such as this. ;)

I'll try to do this. Anyone else having this problem?
I can't imagine why this would be dependent on cache or cookies, but hey, I'll try anything once.
I wish there was a way to have persisistent cookies so I don't have to go back and remember all the secret handshake combinations that are necessary to read the news.
I'm also generally miffed when someone says it is my computer that is the source of the problem when 95% of the time I know that they should know better than to try this old chestnut.
why don't they just ask me to reinstall my operating system? That usually fixes everything.
-sorrry - must take more medication -

I'm wishing that I had not read the above, while swallowing a mouthful of coffee. Amazing what a mess just a little coffee can make.
Now, about that operating system...

In your first post, you say:
I'm running multiple ads in the same campaign so I can see which ad copy pulls better. I've done this a lot.
I have all along been reading this as 'multiple ads in the same Ad Group rather than as multiple ads in the same campaign. These are two very different situations, and I just wanted to check:
You do mean multiple ads in the same Ad Group, right?
I ask because the "Automatically optimize ad serving for my ads" function only applies to multiple ads in the same Ad Group, and has no impact at all on multiple ads (in different Ad Groups) within the same campaign.

I heard from folks at G that in fact there was a bug that they are looking to fix. If you use the auto-op, it works, but if you turn it off.. it doesn't work.
Hell of a way to get someone to use the auto-optimizier!
This probably started about 2 months ago.
If i was running two ads in an adgroup with auto-op 'off' I would get 50/50 distribution..
Any new creatives would not get an equal distribution/slice of the pie. Not sure if this bug was only for new creative added to the mix or not.
As soon as this started up; I pulled back to just 1 creative per adgroup until this gets fixed.
My problem with reporting this is that I have to leave the account as it is then and that is NOT what I want, I want to get back to even rotation ASAP.
AWA please keep us posted on this one as it is a very serious problem for ad conversion testing.
Yes, Ad Group.
But you get there by "Editing Campaign Settings".So is it an ad group or a campaign?
Only AWA knows for sure...
The simplest way to think of it: This is a setting which is made at the campaign level, which affects only Ad Groups which have more than one ad, within that campaign.
AWA please keep us posted on this one as it is a very serious problem for ad conversion testing.
Will do. This is evidently difficult to reproduce, so actual 'working' examples would be valued - and would certainly help in the troubleshooting process.
