Now, i go to google, type "music downloads" and from the adverts which show up, i right click on the heading of 2 ads of the ads, and can see that the destination url is a clickbank affiliate url
(http://hop.clickbank...) but the display url is to the merchant site.
My impression was that the display url SHOULD match the destination url
Is there something I'm missing here.
My understanding was that with the recent google adwords affiliate policy changes, affiliates will now have to create their own landing pages before reccomending the products they wish to promote
Your understanding is incorrect. Re-read the AdWords TOS and the many threads in this forum on the subject.

in one category i monitor, i've noticed:
widgetsRus.com
widgets-R-us.com
www.widgetsRus.com
www.widgets-R-us.com
www.widgetsRus.com
www.widgets-R-us.com
all coming up simultaneously for the same keywords and all leading to one website (with different affiliate ID's)
i e-mailed google support to ask about it on friday.
i haven't heard back from them, but it looks like the ads have been taken down.
