Recommended Daily Budget out of this world?

I'm an editor and writer who has just started learning the ropes with Ad Words to advertise my website: www.editme.ca

I have a question regarding The Recommended Daily Budget. For my campaign Google recommends:
$9,710.00 / day!

I have allotted $7.00 per day for now. Are they out of their minds or what? Or am I in the wrong business?

Your keywords are probably too general ("books", "writing", etc.). Try more specific keywords. You'll get a much more manageable budget and more targeted traffic.

Not suppose to have links in your post.

Sometimes I've noticed that Google's estimates can be a bit high. If you set it in your own budget, you should be fine. You may hit your cap during the day, but you'll be getting your money's worth in clicks.

Check out the help tutorial pages at [adwords.google.com...] and [adwords.google.com...] . Use the keyword wizard to target keywords. Read as much as you can on these forums. Target, and keep on targetting! :)

There is a bug that floats around where local targeting is actually increasing daily budget.

I was looking at a campaign yesterday that targeted a single city in the U.S. for some very specific terms that they'd be lucky to spend $10/day.

The suggested budgeta was little over $17k.

This is a very good point, MovingOnUp. Very general keywords, especially when 'broad matched', can be given an enormous recommended budget - because they have the potential to appear tens (or hundreds) of thousands of times a day. And, at an average CTR of around 2%, the clicks can add up quickly.

More targeted keywords are often much more affordable. Plus they have the advantage of being, well, more targeted!

Also very true, Xeal_PM. One word of caution though. While every advertiser is entirely welcome to set their budget at any level they are comfortable with, if the actual budget is appreciably lower than the 'recommended budget' (found on the 'Edit Campaign Settings' page), then the ads are not likely to show all the time. This is an expected behavior.

While the following is not strictly the case, it will serve to illustrate the point:

If your suggested budget is $100.00, and you set your actual budget to $10.00, then your ads are likely to show in the neighborhood of 10% of the time - over the course of the 24 hour day.
