Just thinking out loud here ...

methinks we will see a lot more Frrogle ads in serps after/when the affiliate change is made.

makes total sense to promote their on-topic shopping channel to the masses via Pay2Play, especially as ad inventory is going to be slightly spare.

anyone care to comment.

and like I said, just thinking out loud, no hidden motive

I doubt it unless they have something up their sleeves.

I think google is purposely making froogle somewhat useless and irrelevant. If the non paid results don't offer the same relevancy as the paid results, users will click on the paid results hence adding revenue.

If Google really only cared about the user experience they would do away with CPC advertising all together and put together the mother of all price comparison websites. There is a very pragmatic reason why they haven't done this and it has nothing to do with enhancing the user experience.

Not every business is running an e-commerce site. A price-comparison engine isn't going to be very useful to the lawyer who's seeking clients for a class-action suit, the travel agent who's designing custom vacation itineraries, or the plastics company that wants leads from injection molders who use engineered plastic compounds.

You're right EuropeForVisitors, but can't you imagine better ways to get this information to the user than a handful of PPC ads along side the SERPS? I certainly can. What I'm trying to say is that if the only thing that mattered to Google was the user experience, I believe they could have made different provisions.

From where I sit Google seems to be trying to "grow the web up".

1)Sandbox/google-lag slows the ability of new spam to affect the market.

2)No direct to merchant ads force you to develop your own websites and content to sell.

These changes make it harder but not impossible for lone-wolf types to exist. Small companies need to adapt and merge or get bought out by bigger ones. Really big ones even go public. I can't see black hat getting into bed with big business.

Graywolf's observations sound right on the money to me.

And mgriffin, I don't think anyone would seriously claim that the AdWords changes are meant to improve the user experience for its own sake. Google is a business, and offering the best possible user experience is good for users and for Google.
