I've recently decided to get into the CPC game so that one day if the big G decides to knock me down in the SERPS I don't starve.

The first day went really well. Spent $11 and made $47...now I'm evened out so I decided to do a little more research on the topic.

If you are sending people to the merchant, how exactly can you track which is your conversion keyword?

Also, as a beginner, would you start off with a few keywords or many more eg. 15-20?

So many many questions. I know how the game works with natural search results but would like to learn more about CPC and any pointers on this forum or elsewhere would be much appreciated.

georgiek50, if it is expert advice and opinion that you're after, you've landed in a really good place.

As you scout for resources, don't overlook those provided on the AdWords site itself. A few that spring to mind:

Search AdWords Support:
[adwords.google.com...]

Optimization Tips:
[adwords.google.com...]

AdWords Demos and Guides:
[adwords.google.com...]

Learning Center
[google.com...]

Hope these'll help you to come up to speed. And keep reading/posting here, of course. ;)

As far as tracking, it depends on the tracking system available. For things like CJ you can use {keyword} as the PID and LinkShare has a similar feature but you have to contact them to get it enabled.
