Im sorry Im just not getting this, I paused my account around 5pm est because I didnt want it to get slowed and I was going to fix my keywords and ads and now I get an email 3.5 hours later telling me its been slowed? Can an account be slowed once its paused? Im just not really getting why adwords likes to slow me so much even when I pause my campaigns heh

okay, I just did a search using a few keywords I had high average positions in and guess what, my ads are still running! What exactly is going on, if pausing your campaign doesnt pause it what exactly does it do?

Yes, for a couple of reasons. First off, the stats you see in your account typically run about three hours behind real time. So, at the moment you pause something, you are not seeing real time information, and stats will continue to come in for three hours - and an account can be slowed on the basis of that updated info.

Secondly, when you pause (or make any change in your account, for that matter) it does not get updated instantly. There are many thousands of servers involved, and it is not unusual to see a delay of an hour or more during peak periods, before they are all updated.

Im just not really getting why adwords likes to slow me so much even when I pause my campaigns.

Accounts are slowed when a number of keywords are not meeting a minimum standard for Clickthrough Rate. So the best approach is to analyze and revise your keywords/ads so that they are more specific and targeted, before restoring full delivery.

I would double check that they are actually paused in your account. If they are, and they are still running hours later, that is definitely odd. It would probably be best to contact AdWords support, as they can look at the account and give you an informed answer - whereas those of us on this Forum can only guess based on very limited information.

I have previously had this kind of problem, and have sorted it out. It would be good however if slowing of the account could not be triggered until the user has had a chance to see the stats!

I have in the past started an ad, and been slowed before the stats are showing more than a handful of impressions - I'd like Google to say that they'll at least give me a chance to see the ads are going badly before slowing the account themselves!

I know, I was just slowed with 500 impressions and none of my keywords really had the chance to get a good # of impressions before it was slowed. How can it be judged it a handful of keywords are getting less than 100 impressions before being slowed.
