How long for Google Adwords to start?

As I recall, my first Google Adwords ad started appearing very soon after setting it up. My second ad (in a new campaign) hasn't appeared after a couple of hours. Is that normal? Does it matter than the keyword I'm using gets no results in a search?

I figured out the answer, but still don't understand it. If you search Google on "example.com" (WITHOUT the quote marks) you get no results and no ads. If you use the quote marks you get a lot of results and eight ads including mine (which I'll remove soon). Why are there no search results and no ads when searching without the quote marks?

Thanks,

Mick Ruthven

On Google search, example.com (or www.example.com; example.com/page1.htm ...) is designed to search for the exact URL.

If you use "example.com", the search will be equivalent to a search of "example com" or "example-com". This is just a normal phrase-match search, it will show SERP results and ads, if any.
