Problem understanding KW matching.

In one of my campaigns, I use the following KWs:

"red widgets"
[red widgets]

I look on Google search, checking for these 2 KWs, and clicking through to my site.

When I later check on AdWords KW stats, clicks are recorded against [red widgets] only.

Now, I understand that searching on Google for [red widgets] will record an impression/click for red widgets - no brackets or quote marks - but I don't understand why a "red widgets" search doesn't show on my stats for "red widgets"

Is there something I am missing?

Are you searching on the term: red widgets?

If so, it matches the exact match and that gets the click. If you had searched on: buy red widgets

Then the click would got to the phrase match term. If it had been for: widgets red

Then it would only come up under a broad match of red widgets.

All I searched on was: "red widgets" and: [red widgets], followed by a click onto my site.
I didn't search on: red widgets or:buy red widgets.

And the 2 clicks in the KW stats appeared under: [red widgets], with nothing recorded for: "red widgets"

A search using literally "red widgets" means in the organic search results to do the search looking for the term as a single phrase not two distinct words. I'm not sure what [red widgets] would be treated as. It is probably in the Google help for searching. In either case, they are modifiers for the organic search not exact terms for adwords. Adwords will just use the actual words and match them up as I described above.

To test [red widgets] do the query: red widgets
to test "red widgets" so the query: find me red widgets
