What - Adwords Slowed?

Is Google doing something about the huge keyword lists people are using in adwords?

I got my account slowed today. This hasn't happened for a year since I first opened my account.

I have been expanding my keyword lists lately. Most now have a few hundred instead of the 50 to 75 tightly targeted and focused keywords.

Anyone else have an opinion or experiencing this?

Thanks for the response. My account has been slowed again and it is just as you describe your problem in the thread. I too deleted everything slowed. I will just start over slowly adding in keywords.

Ive been doing this for a year and haven't had this problem since I first began my account. The only thing Ive done different lately is add lots of keywords to my adgroups ( as many as 300 at a time ). I believe my account has been flagged for this reason.

Wow! I deleted all the slowed keywords and restarted my account. Before I can finish adding a few keywords to my adgroups, all the new keywords are being slowed.

My account has been flagged for some reason.

My account has been flagged for some reason.

Cjshu, having worked with AdWords daily for the last 2 years or so, I can assure you that your account has not been flagged to revieve special attention, and that you don't have to meet a higher standard than anyone else. ;)

What you're describing is the same algo that every single advertiser works within. It is designed to insure that you are showing ads to Google's users that those users find relevant.

If your account has run for a year, and is now being slowed after adding hundreds of less targeted keywords here is what it means:

You account has probably been running on the edge of being slowed all along, but has never actually gone over the edge until now. And what has pushed you over the edge are the large number of less targeted keywords that you've recently added.

How to fix it? It's hard to be specific without seeing the account, but here are some general tips:

* Get rid of general keywords, especially single-word keywords.

* Focus on keywords that accurately describe your actual products/services.

* Use negative keywords to your advantage.

* Use Ad Groups to your advantage. This means creating lists of keywords all on the same topic, then creating an ad on the exact same topic.

* Once your account has a healthy CTR, then you should be able to start using less targeted keywords without the whole account getting slowed.

Those are just the high points. Reading this Forum on a regular basis will have you up-to-speed in no time.

Best of success to you! ;)

Thanks for the reply. Almost all of my keywords were 2 and 3 word combinations.

My problem is that they slowed all keywords that have no impressions yet and quite a few with high CTRs. I realize I have probably been close, but when I try to restore the account and start slowly adding keywords (maybe 20 or 30 at a time instead of 300) within 15 minutes all the newly added keywords are being slowed.
Some of the keywords with high CTRs may only have 20 or so impressions.

I have deleted all the slowed keywords, restored the account and tried to add a few new keywords 3 times and this has happened each time. All of these accounts had good CTRs before I started this. I am awaiting a reply from Google.
