Adwords appearing in newsletters

While reading my newsletters from cnet news.com, I noticed that from aprox the beginning of the month they have been including google ads at the bottom of their newsletters.

It doesn't say anything about "Ads by Google", but the links go through [imageads.googleadservices.com......] and even produces PSAs.

However, these ads, will looking like normal text ads, are actually one image hosted on Google, with an image map on top.

So what gives? Did I miss the announcement that Google was putting ads into newsletters? The ads are all quite generic.
