I think I can clarify that, JayCee.
The simple answer: The ads at the very top of the Google search results page may be included in the number sent to AOL, but not always.
More detail:
* Actually, the top four approved ads go to the top of the page on AOL. (NOTE: There may also be an additional four at the bottom of the page.)
* There may be either zero, one, or two ads at the top of a Google search results page. This varies from keyword to keyword, and from search to search.
* The ads in the two top-top positions on Google will go to AOL, assuming they are approved.
* So, if there are no ads at the top on Google, then the first four approved ads on the right go to the top of AOL.
* If there is one (approved) ad at the top on Google, then that ad plus the top three (approved) ads on the right will go.
* If there are two (approved) ads at the top on Google, then those two, plus the top two (approved) ads on the right will go.
Sometimes I think I have a remarkable ability to turn a simple answer into a complicated one. Hope this is not such a case! ;)

I'd much rather have a complex real-world answer i can apply in the complex real world than a simple idealized one that only works in a textbook. And with my thick skull, repeat answers from different angles help too, so "ya done good". Sure! Happy to.
As background, each partner site determines how many ads they'll show - and some time ago, AOL decided to show up to 8 ads - with up to 4 at the top, and then up to 4 ads at the bottom of their search page, assuming there were that many approved ads to show.
You can see this for yourself if you go to AOL search and do a search on something likely to have lots of ads, say for example 'web hosting'. You'll likely see a total of 8 ads.
The same 'rules' apply at the bottom. In other words, when 8 ads are showing, they will be the top 8 approved ads from the the Google search results pages.

I can't search at aol at all. Keep getting some very bizarre errors related to Norton and security intrustion attempts when searching at AOL - is anyone else seeing this problem?
