Broad match giving me grief ... I think

I am trying for quite low volume but very targeted keywords, using exact match and phrase match.

My ads show fine for some of the short and v. specific phrases.

But where my specific phrase (maybe 4 or 5 words long) includes individual very competitive and expensive keywords my ads don't show. The cost of the 2 or 3 word phrases my competitors are going for is well out of reach for my campaign.

I thought I would be able to get round this by trying to pick up the crumbs from the big boys but this doesn't seem to be possible?

eg: big boys are targeting:

widget training

I'm targeting:

widget training equipment type and application

Interestingly, this same problem doesn't occur for the big boys. In other words, people targeting just "widgets" don't get listed in preference to their two word phrases.

Really hope you guys can help me with this.

Because of default broad matching, it is difficult to get around your problem. The only suggestion I can think of is -

- Bid high for your important 4 word phrases
- Add 'widget training' as a keyword but bid lower.

If you have the Google conversion code installed, you will be able to check the performance of the two sets of keywords. Adjust the bid prices based on the conversion rates.
