I use SBC/Yahoo DSL for my Internet connection, I am in Austin, Texas, and until recently Google AdWords local targeting worked for me. All of my AdWord ads are targeted to a few surrounding states, and recently I noticed that my ads were't showing up for my keywords.

I called Google, and they said that my IP is showing up as a Virgnia IP. I wonder if this is a strategy on Yahoo's part to throw a wrench into Google's local targeting ability. Anyone else using Yahoo for Internet access noticing this?

Yahoo does not play a role in the hardware/ISP/IP aspect of the service. Yahoo only provides the branding and the software. SBC handles the backend.

So, sweeping aside the conspiracy theory, the important issue here, if true, is Google's inability to target SBC customers.

This will affect not only adwords, but the relevancy of their local serps, too.

Any other SBC users seeing geographic discrepancies in Google Adwords targeting?

I called SBC, and they said that they were having network issues so they were temporarily routing some Austin area clients through Virginia. A few days later my routing returned to normal.

Thanks for the update, espeed. You really caught my attention and interest there.

Nice to know that it's temporary!
